The Black Free Form

She's Gotta Have It, directed by Spike Lee was definitely the highlight of my year. Nola Darling expressed the true essence of the Black Free Form by not giving a flying f#ck about what anyone had to say regarding her passion, relationships, and overall swag. Her demeanor was free-spirited, which we learn in watching that it comes with living slightly on the edge.

The essence of the Free Black Form comes with being unapologetic, intentional, emotionally intelligent, free-spirited, and being as true to yourself as possible. What makes this especially Black as hell is the fact that most Black people don't live with the freedom to be their true selves without the judgement and hate of others. It beats the odds of others' unnecessary opinions and puts the emphasis back on us, being extremely Black in our greatest free form.

I noticed that the best ways that I am confident in my Black Free Form is practicing and actively engaging in self-love and self-care, which for me personally work very differently. My self-love involves my emotional and spiritual well-being. I usually tend to write and create goals for myself to hold myself accountable and keep my emotions in check. I also like to sing and create art in whatever ways I can. I pray everyday and allow God to create peace within my space. Self-care is usually involving my physical and mental well-being, so I do my nails and hair every week and blast my music loudly on the weekends while singing, cleaning, and cooking. I also do boxing every week to keep me physically fit and my mind sharp. I enjoy taking care of myself and I can proudly say that after years of not caring at all.

My Black Free Form has evolved over the years and there were plenty of seasons that I wasn't able to fully be free in my thinking, my body, and my relationships with others. I found myself subconsciously putting a crutch on my ability to move and think freely, regardless of the naysayers and haters. I wanted to know what it's like to do something with being understanding of the pros and cons that lie ahead #adulting. I appreciate where I am and know that I have a long way to go, but imagine if I was still caged.

My dream is to create spaces where Black folx can live in their true Black Free Form with no hesitation or apprehensions. I believe that art is usually the best way to open the door to people's true self. I usually like to challenge artists to always create spaces for Black people to feel free, even if it's just a moment. A moment can lead to a lifetime. The Black Free Form is beautiful, raw, authentic, painful, sassy, and classy all in one. We as Black people must try to show others that being mentally and emotionally free is possible, one day at a time.
