RM: What has been your journey to being in the field that you’re in today? (Artist, Musician, Athlete, Entrepreneur, Business Owner, Creative, Etc.) What has been the most impactful lesson that you've learned?
MC: My journey started at a young age with an interest in hip hop and poetry. However, it wasn’t until recently (within this last year) that I learned sharing my poetry could not only uplift me but those around me as well . The most impactful lesson I learned is, it’s never too late to pour into a passion.
RM: For those who may not know, how did you develop the name or concept for your business or project?
MC: My name is simple. It’s my first and last name. I chose to use my name because my poetry is raw and authentic, and I wanted my name to match that.
RM: 1) Tell us about your inspiration behind an upcoming project. 2) What do you hope to accomplish and what do you hope people take away from it?
MC: I have two upcoming projects: First, I have the opportunity to host an event at the Tucson Festival of Books on March 16 where I talk about the positive impact poetry and the community has had on me and my mental health. It is titled, Slam Poetry: Healing One Poem at a Time. I hope this event encourages those who attend to continue to pursue their passion, surround themselves with community, and be authentic with their art. Shortly after that, I will be competing in my first regional team competition in New Mexico. I hope to meet more amazing people in this community, learn from other competitors, of course, I hope to win.
RM: What have been some effective ways that you've marketed yourself in your space and industry?
MC: This is an area I am learning more about. I have a full-time job outside of this, so right now I am still learning how to balance everything (family, kids, work, and poetry)
RM: How have you grown as an entrepreneur or creative in the last 5 years and who's been influential in that process?
MC: I just started sharing my poetry in February of 2024. I feel I have grown as a writer and a performer thanks to all the poets I have competed with. In addition, I have learned so much from my Ghost Poetry teammates. Lastly, it’s the people who host open mics and slams that inspire me most. Without these people, local poets and local musicians wouldn’t have the platform to share their art.
RM: What are some short-term goals that you are working towards, that friends and supporters can help you with?
MC: Right now, I am focused on supporting my Ghost Poetry teammates in preparing for our upcoming competition. In addition to that, I hope to continue competing and performing individually. Lastly, I hope to find space to possibly host my own open mic and/or slam at some point in the future (but not anytime soon).
RM: What are one or two things that keep you grounded? How do you practice good self-care or how can you practice it better (if you've been lacking in that area)?
MC: My wife and sons keep me grounded. Anytime I’m overwhelmed with competition or even disappointed in my performance, I remind myself how grateful I am to have such an amazing team supporting me from home. For self care, it can range from writing, to watching movies, getting out of town, spending time with family, or just doing things I enjoy outside of poetry (binge watch a show, watch sports, etc)
RM: What are some words of wisdom or encouragement for upcoming creative entrepreneurs that you'd like to share?
MC: What has helped me, is creating my poetry for myself (not for anyone else or any other purpose). Sure I use it to compete, but it has to start with me. When it’s for me, it’s the most authentic and I enjoy writing it or performing it the most.
RM: What has been the best piece of advice you have ever received in reference to your career and industry?
MC: Don’t be afraid to compete against or surround yourself with those who may be more talented than you. Don’t let comparison stop you from growing. Being around other talented artists is one of the best ways to learn and grow in your craft.
