Lewis Santana Placed 3rd in the Spring 2019 Poetry Contest.

As you know each season we host a Poetry Contest, to encourage writers of all walks to exercise their pens for a chance to win some pretty cool prizes. This Spring 2019 we challenged writers to dive into what they believed "The World Needs Most Right Now," we got submissions in from a few people here in Arizona and the Los Angeles Area. The competition was pretty tough, but we are proud to announce the winners!

Artist Bio:

I was born in South Central Los Angeles and raised in South Phoenix since the age of 2 years old. I grew up as an only child in a household that only consisted of my mother and grandmother, and they always did their best to support me in whatever I pursued. Even though I pursued sports, music was always a huge part of my life. Poetry is where it all started out, it spoke to my soul and was introduced to me at a young age. My family & I had gone through a lot of pain and changes, so poetry was extremely therapeutic for me. Later on, poetry gave me the segway into rapping because I felt it was the same thing just with a lil more rhythm. So over time the blend of the 2 became more potent to my growth as an artist, and it made me want to do more, but I didn’t want to just make songs, I wanted to create actual music that is timeless. So I became a student of the game, putting trust in the process and here we are today.

Prompt: During these trying times, what does the world need most right now?

Poem:

You can feel it in the air

Inside the initial moments as you wake

The strength to rise above yesterday

But are you human enough to break?

A super hero in your own light

A champ of your own story

The strength to move mountains but is that enough strength to hold out belief for me?

We know this is a marathon

But would you run blindfolded?

With no time quoted

or promises of metals that are golden?

That is what it's like for all of us..

Our nest broke and we learned to fly by force

When they pass you the baton on your

Blind marathon I hope you hold it like a torch

The world's changing, the play calls

Need more love in the huddle...

The world needs to know

That there's light at the end of the tunnel
